Fryerstown School

Fryerstown School No. 252, circa 1915, is a recently refurbished community-run facility offering great camping facilities for Goldfields Track users.

Situated just south of Castlemaine, the school is no longer part of the state schools system, and the facilities are enjoying a new lease of life for social, educational and artistic activities, workshops, functions, events, and day and overnight stops for bushwalkers and mountain bike riders.

Set in naturalistic surrounds in the peaceful hamlet of Fryerstown, the school is a charming and historic venue located in the heart of the Goldfields. Fryerstown is approx 13.5km from Castlemaine, along the Goldfields Track, or a 15 minute drive.

The school’s proximity to the Goldfields Track makes it an ideal overnight stop, and a base for exploring the flora, fauna and features of the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park.

Camping and caravan sites are available in the grounds at the rear of the Fryerstown School, and on-site facilities include a modern shower, toilet and hand washing laundry facilities, outdoor sink, potable water, picnic tables and a fire ring. Sites are not powered, however campers have access to power. Camping on-site is suited to experienced hikers and campers that are self-sufficient.

The grounds comprise 10 sites suitable for tents, caravans or camper vehicles – ideal for families and small groups wishing to explore Fryerstown, the Mount Alexander Gold Diggings and the Goldfields Track. On-site vans or tents may be available and arranged on request (additional charges apply). Camping is short-term only and not suitable for stays of longer than 14 days.
Guides and talks on the local flora and fauna and the rich history of the area may be arranged on request (additional charges apply.)
