Womindjika Liyanganyuk Banyul

Welcome to Mount Alexander and the Goldfields Track

Djaara (Dja Dja Wurrung People) welcome you to Liyanganyuk Banyul (Mount Alexander) which is located on Djandak, the traditional lands and waterways of Djaara, who have been a part of this cultural landscape for countless generations.

This whole mountain is very important and sacred to Djaara as a place of gathering and Tanderrum (Welcome Ceremony involving multiple tribes, clans or mobs). In Djaara language, Mount Alexander is called Liyanganyuk Banyul, which means ‘his teeth: Young boys would be brought here for initiation ceremonies. which involved knocking out their front primary (baby) teeth.

Acknowledgement of Country

The Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung People are the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land and waters over which the Goldfields Track passes. The Goldfields Track Committee pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging and extend this to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
