The Goldfields Track Committee Inc formed in 2008, when its predecessor, Goldfields Tourism Inc., worked with the Great Dividing Trail Association to address the walking track’s growing use by mountain bike riders. This led to a successful $500,000 Commonwealth tourism grant, which, among other outcomes, resulted in the Track’s original name, the Great Dividing Trail, being changed to the Goldfields Track.

The funding also helped with the installation of over 900 posts to give direction, as well as track upgrades, mountain bike diversions, safety warnings, new signage, mapping, and asset recording. The project led to Goldfields Tourism Inc. evolving into the Goldfields Track Committee, with the purpose of marketing the revitalised walking/riding Track.

Today, the Goldfields Track Committee promotes cycling and walking, encourages business development to support track users, maintains the track, and collaborates with the traditional owner groups—Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung—whose Country the track traverses.

Interpretation project

There are new information signs along the Goldfields Track, that were installed as a partnership project between DJAARA; Wadawurrung Traditional Owners; Parks Victoria; Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, and tourism and local government representatives, with support from the Victorian Government.

These beautifully designed signs share the stories of the Dja Dja Wurrung and Wadawurrung People, and helps to return Traditional Owner culture and values into the landscape. They also highlight other important people and events of the Goldrush era that took place across much of central Victoria.

Have a look at our Understanding Country pages for more information and background on this important project.
